Dress on Trek
Dressing right for a trek is equally important to keep one safe.
- We always recommend full hands shirt and full length pants.
- Shirt – Choose a light material with full hands or get arm sleeves. Most of the treks, we go through forests, hills, harsh sun. Full hands will protect your hands against scratches, insect bites, sun.
- Do avoid overcoats, as on the trail one will feel warm and a coat will add an unnecessary weight. Many times one tend to wear half length/sleeveless shirt and pair it up with a coat. But once it gets warm they tend to remove the coat and the arms are exposed. So instead of a coat, do choose a good full hands shirt.
- Pant – Choose a full length pant. They will protect your legs against scratches, insect bites. Also choose one which is flexible to allow you to move freely. Avoid soft materials which easily get stuck to thorns.
- Trekking shoes [Preferably shoes which cover till your ankle] : A shoe should always have a good sole and should not slip. Shoes with soft sole should be avoided, else one will tend to slip on the trail. Also when we choose a shoe see that the toe and the tip of the shoe has enough gap, else the toes will hurt on trail especially on descent when there is more pressure on toes. Trekking shoes, it is always recommended to buy 1 size bigger then your normal shoe size.
- For monsoon treks rainproof shoes are good to have.
- Socks: Wear good length socks. Avoid wearing ankle length socks exposing your ankles which can result in insect bites. On longer treks and monsoon treks do keep an extra pair of socks.
- Sun Cap : A good cap protects one from sun and also while going through forests will protect from getting hair tangled in branches.
- Choose soft earth colors so that they merge with nature.
- Raincoat/Poncho – For monsoon treks.
Food on Treks
Eating right is important on treks. As your body is going through a physical challenge it is important to maintain the right balance of food.
For 1 Day Treks :
6AM: Start the day with a fruit or some milk until you have your breakfast.
8AM: Have a light breakfast with less oil. Idli is an ideal choice.
1PM: Lunch – Always would suggest some simple food to be packed from home than buying food from outside. A few simple things which can be packed the night before itself if you are starting early.
- Boiled Eggs.
- Boiled Chana.
- Carrots, Kheera, Fruits.
- Dry Roti and Pickle/Jam.
- For South Indian’s if you can make it, Pulihora is a best option. If it is summer curd rice.
- Curd.
- Dry Fruits.
- 2L water
- 1/2L Buttermilk. Avoid sugar drinks.
- Lime Juice.
All through the trek : Fruits , energy bar’s.
The above items are simple to make and they make a great lunch on treks.
Alternatively one can pack some breakfast items for lunch when we stop to have breakfast.
Water: One must always make sure to hydrate themselves before, on and after the trek. Before the trek a day before do make sure to take 3L of water. On the trek trail do make sure to have 2L of water at a minimum. Post the trek 1L and the next day 3L. Dehydration kills all the fun.
